How To Become Self-Hosted!

How To Become Self-Hosted!

Hello again gang!

As most of you may know, I recently transferred my little blog onto bigger and better things and became Self-Hosted. Since doing this a few of my friends and readers got in contact and asked me how to go about it. First of all, I would like to say a big thank you to Holly for helping me out a huge deal! Please read her post too as she talks you through some of the steps she took in order to make A Daily Dose of Holly the amazing site it is today!

In this post I am going to talk about my reasons for going Self-Hosted and how you can go about it yourself. So I hope you can learn something valuable from it!

Why To Go Self Hosted?

In the most simplest form I wanted my Blog to feel and look more professional. I loved my blog, however as the time went on I could feel my Storage Space lower and when I re-read my post I was bombarded with random adverts that had absolutely nothing to do with my blog or it’s content. I felt like it wasn’t truly mine! Also, I was started to get more attention in regards to my blog, companies were getting in contact with me and I felt my page didn’t quite cut it. Now that I am self-hosted I feel like I have complete ownership over Adventures With Amanda and feel much more confident when sharing out my link on social media or with potential collaborations. You get much more space, prettier themes and so much more freedom when going Self-Hosted so I highly recommend it!

What To Do First?

First of all it is highly important that you get the Package that is right for you. So many Websites provide you different deals when creating your own domain so make sure you shop around to see what is best for you personally, and what best suits to blog/website you are trying to create. I also recommend that you nosey up on your fellow bloggers to see how they went about it. I must of read 1000 different posts before making up my mind; eventually landing on Holly’s which finally pushed me over the fence! Whatever platform you choose to go with, there will be support for you, however since I went with Siteground I will inform you on my next steps.

Working with Pipdig and Siteground

First thing’s first – Get yourself onto the Pipdig site where they offer free migration from our Original blog onto your new Siteground site. Through the link above you will be taken to a page that has a direct link to Siteground to make your own domain. Choose the plan that suits you best and within your pricerange. I just went for the Start Up Plan as I don’t have that much traffic to justify going any higher. After choosing your plan you will be asked to create your own domain, this can be whatever you want it to be and you can choose which ending you have (.com .net). Little bit of advice, select the Site ID Protect package to save yourself getting harassed! After you have set that up and returned back to the Pipdig page you will be asked to buy a theme for your blog. This was my favourite part, and completely down to your own style!

Once purchased you then quality for FREE migration! Simply add in your details (images below) and voila you are done! It should take up to 5 days but by then all your posts, comments etc.. will be transferred over and you will be free to play about with your theme and make it your own!

Now, I am a big dafty hahaha! I created my Siteground site before checking out the Pipdig link and did not click the correct link. Due to this I was unsure if I would qualify for the free migration. Therefore I decided to migrate it all on my own, but it’s cool .. I’m here to show you what to do! To be honest, I enjoyed doing it myself, felt more in control and I was surprised at how fast I managed to do it in!

How To Manually Transferring Blog Content?

  1. Sign into your new Siteground account.
  2. Click the My Accounts tab at the top of the page.
  3. Click on the domain you have created.
  4. There should be a red/orange button that says Go to cPanel. Click this and accept following messages.
  5. Scroll down until you find the WordPress Icon. Click on this and select one of the Install buttons.
  6. Once Installed it will ask you to customise your details. This is where you will create your NEW wordpress username/password and where you can insert the NEW url etc…
  7. Finally, your Installation will be complete and you can sign into your new WordPress App!

So now you will be sitting with two WordPress sites, your original one and a very empty one! Time to migrate your content!! 👍🏼

  1. Log into your WordPress Account.
  2. Use the Switch Site button at the top and ensure you are on your old account (not self hosted).
  3. Go to the Dashboard (can type /wp-admin/ at the end of your URL if you can’t find it on the app).
  4. Head down to tools and select Export. From here you can select all and export ALL items from your blog.

After this has been completed and saved onto your computer, head back to WordPress but this time go on your new (self hosted) site.

  1. Again go to your Dashboard.
  2. Head to tools and select Import.
  3. From here you can browse your computer and select this items you saved earlier.
  4. This should take a little time.

And then that’s you. Good to go! I made a small error along the way and my followers did not migrate properly. However I mailed Wordpres and they fixed this for me straight away!

I hope this has been helpful! 🙂😘 Good luck!

This is very helpful. Self-hosted sounds so overwhelming. I’m no where close to having the traffic to go self-hosted but this should come in handy if I ever do.

Damn where were you a week ago when I decided to go ahead after seeing your new page?! 😂 I actually managed to get pipdig to do it for me but had a few hairy moments when I signed up for site ground at first and semi tried to do it myself. It’s all sorted now though but your guide will be super helpful for anyone out there thinking of making the jump xx

Thanks this is really useful. I am pinning for if I ever decide to go self hosted! I do keep thinking I would like more control over my blog, but then I’m also not very ‘tech’!

Great post! You did such a great job at making this information digestible, I think the hardest part with self-hosting is it can feel overwhelming. Also, congrats on the sponsorship offers, very exciting!

Good post. When I changed to self-hosting I could have used you. I did purchase a privacy package when I bought my domain name. Glad as I don’t get spam and few others have said they didn’t and now do. So good advice.

    Hello Amanda,

You mentioned that companies were getting ahold of you. If I may ask, what were the companies looking for and how did they get ahold of you? Thank you!

Hello. It was a jewellery/accessories company called Civion (America) and I think they want me to promote their products and send out a discount code. If people use it then I’ll get a percentage back. I haven’t persued this offer yet as it’s my first one ha! Hope that helps xx
